    "Fishing on Lake Arenal is in high gear now.  With the lake levels lowering by the day the fishing is getting better and better. We averaged catching 5 Rainbow Bass each day we fished. Fishing will continue to get better as the water level continues to lower.  The size of the Rainbow Bass have not been to big though. The fish are running a couple pounds. Area of the lake are starting to get exposed that have been underwater for many months. As water levels continue to drop the grass around the lake will start to die out and the fish will move from the grass to the submerged trees and bushes.

    As the water drops you can see the Rainbow Bass holes in the shoreline. These round holes are the rainbow bass nests. We're not sure if they only use them for nesting and hatching or just for sleeping in each night. Evidence seems to indicate they use the holes year around as sleeping dens. We believe the rainbow bass lay their eggs in the grass along the shoreline.

   The lake however is very beautiful and clean. I highly recommend a boat tour / fishing trip to view the lake up close.  On our last boat tour in April 2009 we saw Toucans, Howler Monkeys and many other species of local animals. We also got some great footage of Arenal Volcano from the lake. Kayaking on the lake is also becoming very popular." You can see the volcano from many areas of the lake.

Many prefer white spinner baits and others like top water plugs in red colors. I like a combination of top water baits in the early morning while the fish are up in the grass flats and near shore. Then as the morning turns to afternoon I switch to shallow diving plugs and spinner baits in red, white, chartreuse and green. In the evenings it's best to troll deep diving crank baits in red, green, yellow and white. This is probably the best method to hook up with a big fish. Although Fishing Guides disagree on how to fish the lake from season to season, you can't beat hitting the lake early in the morning and fishing white spinner baits or red shallow divers. You may not get the biggest fish this way but you get more strikes.

 The best time to fish Lake Arenal with a Fishing Guide or by walking the shore is when the lake water level is rising or falling.  The level is usually rising from June to July and falling from February to April. The times will vary depending on the water releasing by the local water company for flood control. Check with local to find out where the water level is before planning your trip to lake Arenal.
